Politics and governance
The University of Manchester’s Global Development Institute (GDI) is leading the FutureDAMS work on the politics and governance of dam building, asking how are decisions about dams made including: whether to build a dam vs other technologies; what determines where dams are sited; what are the prioroty purposes of dams and what role does technical analysis play in this decision making process?
The team has four primary areas of research focus and are investigating the contexts of Ethiopia and Ghana:
- The political economy of the electricity sector
- The politics of building capacity in dam planning
- Decision making around dam location and design
