Hydropower is often considered a renewable source of electricity, widely used to inform Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) as part of climate mitigation. However, research suggests there are significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from reservoirs that cover vast areas of the tropics. As part of the FutureDAMS project, the role of dams in Ghana delivering on its NDC and Paris commitments is examined through three future energy scenarios.

The webinar ‘Implications of hydro dams for decarbonising Ghana’s energy consistent with Paris climate is presenting the latest FutureDAMS research on the implications of hydro dams for decarbonising Ghana’s energy consistent with Paris climate objectives. The speakers include:

  • Jaise Kuriakose, Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, University of Manchester,
  • Laura Zordeh, The Energy Commission, Ghana
