Hydro 2019. 14-16 October 2019, Porto, Portugal

Dr Judith Plummer Braeckman and Dr Sanna Markkanen attended the ‘Hydro 2019’ international conference in Porto, Portugal on 14-16 October, 2019 to disseminate FutureDAMS research on the topic of hydropower finance. On the Monday morning, Sanna presented a paper looking at the complexity of structuring private finance agreements for large hydropower projects in emerging economies which is the subject of an upcoming FutureDAMS working paper. In the afternoon, Sanna participated in a panel discussion together with representatives from EDF, Mott MacDonald, IFC and AfDB.

On Tuesday morning, Judith chaired a session on Climate Finance, setting the scene with a presentation on the Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosure. Other presenters in this session included Clare Shaky and Sejal Patel from FutureDAMs partners IIED and a representative from the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy in Norway, with papers focusing on climate challenges and opportunities for climate finance for hydropower.

Across the sessions there was strong support for the importance of sustainable finance for hydropower in meeting the SDG goal of affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
